The manufacturing process is the primary difference between seamless and welded pipes. A seamless stainless steel pipe is formed by extruding a solid billet through a piercing mill to create a hollow tube. The tube is then rolled and drawn to the required dimensions. There is no welded seam, so the pipe is homogeneous in structure. A welded stainless steel pipe is formed by rolling a flat strip into a cylindrical shape and welding the edges together. The weld seam is then heat treated and may be cold worked to restore the corrosion resistance of the material. In our factory, we produce Stainless Steel Welded Pipe using the TIG welding process with a backing gas to prevent oxidation on the inside of the weld. This results in a weld seam that is virtually indistinguishable from the base material when properly finished.

Seamless pipes are generally 20 to 40 percent more expensive than welded pipes for the same size and material. The lead time for seamless pipes is longer because the manufacturing process is slower and the material is more difficult to source. The cost advantage of welded pipes is most significant for large diameter pipes because seamless pipes require a large billet to be pierced, which is more difficult and expensive. For pipes above 8 inches NPS, the cost advantage of welded pipes is substantial. In most cases, a Stainless Steel Welded Pipe is adequate for general service applications, including water supply, chemical processing, and food grade piping. The weld seam, when properly manufactured and inspected, is not a weak point.
